Welcome to Kindergarten Family Activity Calendar - September

Welcome to Kindergarten™ - Before starting school, children in the Welcome to Kindergarten program across Canada are given preparatory resources and experiences to position them for school success and lifelong learning. Parents/caregivers are invited to attend a workshop at their neighbourhood school where they receive early literacy resources as part of the Welcome to Kindergarten™ program and learning strategies for using the resources with their child.

The year before and when a child starts school is an exciting and sometimes stressful time for children and their parents. We, at The Learning Partnership, developed the Welcome to Kindergarten ^TM Activity Calendar to help families get ready for the child’s transition into formal schooling.

 

The activities for this month are:

Week 1

As you do everyday things like setting the table, encourage your child to name familiar things – e.g. “Let’s put a fork and knife at each place.” “Do you think we need a spoon?”

Week 2

Play with your child and, as you play, chat about what your child is doing – e.g. “Tell me what you are doing.” “ What does your teddy bear want for lunch?”

Week 3

Encourage the use of words that describe colour, shape, size and feel. Use these words yourself – e.g. “ I’m going to wear my green sweater today.” “Let’s find your big truck.”

Week 4

Play language games. Games help your child develop vocabulary, concentration and listening skills – e.g. Sing favourite nursery rhymes and children’s songs. Make up words that rhyme with your child’s name, a favourite object, a nonsense word.

Bienvenue à la Maternelle: Calendrier des Activités

À l’automne précédant leur entrée à la maternelle, des enfants de trois et quatre ans reçoivent des ressources préparatoires et vivent des expériences qui favoriseront leur réussite scolaire et leur attitude envers l’acquisition continue du savoir. Parents/soignants et enfants sont invités à assister à la séance d’orientation de Bienvenue à la maternelle à l’école de leur quartier, où ils reçoivent le sac Bienvenue à la maternelle rempli de ressources d’apprentissage précoce et qu’ils apprennent à utiliser à la maison.

Activités familiales

1re semaine

Alors que vous vaquez à vos occupations de tous les jours, comme mettre la table, encouragez votre enfant à nommer les objets familiers. P. ex.– « Mettons une fourchette et un couteau à chaque place. »– « Penses-tu qu’on a besoin d’une cuillère? »

2e semaine

Lorsque vous jouez avec votre enfant, parlez-lui de ce qu’il fait. P. ex.– « Dis-moi ce que tu fais. »– « Qu’est-ce que ton ourson veut pour dîner?

3e semaine

Encouragez votre enfant à utiliser des mots qui décrivent les couleurs, les formes, les dimensions, les sensations.Utilisez ces mots vous-même. P. ex.– « Je vais mettre mon chandail vert aujourd’hui. » – « Essayons de trouver ton gros camion. »

4e semaine

Faites des jeux de langage. Ces jeux aident les enfants à développer leur vocabulaire et leurs capacités de concentration et d’écoute. P. ex. – « Chantez des comptines et des chansons pour enfants. » – « Inventez des mots qui riment avec le nom de votre enfant, un objet favori, un mot inventé. »

Winning the experience of a lifetime!!

Take Our Kids to Work is an annual, national program in which grade 9 students are hosted by parents, relatives and volunteers at workplaces across the country. The program supports career development by helping students connect school, the world of work and their own futures.  The national online Ultimate Dream Job Contest, an extension of Take our Kids to Work™ day, begins at the end of August. It offers grade nine students the opportunity to submit a photo and brief description of their dream job for a chance of winning a trip to Ottawa to meet the speaker of the House of Commons. Weekly prizes are awarded to three entries with the most votes from website visitors. The top finisher each week is eligible to advance to the finalist gallery and have a chance of winning the trip to Ottawa.

 
One of the most wonderful experiences that I’ve had in my life was going to Ottawa to visit the Prime Minister of Canada and seeing some of the attractions this nation’s capital has to offer. This trip was the grand prize for winning The Learning Partnership's Take our Kids to Work™ Ultimate Dream Job Contest.

Being in Ottawa on November 3, 2010, gave me the opportunity  to meet  Prime Minister Stephen Harper at his personal residence, ride with him in his bullet-proof limousine and receive a private tour of his parliamentary office. I was permitted to sit at his desk and govern the country, if only for a few seconds. Next I met the Honourable Peter Milliken, Speaker of the House of Commons, and enjoyed a private tour of his office. In the afternoon I dined with Greg Kerr, MP for Southwestern Nova Scotia in the Parliament Hill dinner hall. In addition, I had the opportunity to meet with Matthew Betts, a renowned archaeologist who inspired me even more to want to follow my dream. I also had the opportunity to visit some historical and educational sites such as the Parliament Buildings, The Royal Canadian Mint and the Canadian Museum of Civilization. When I won this prize I was really excited, but being in Ottawa with all the attention from the media was really overwhelming. I even had the opportunity to be interviewed on Power Play – a CBC news program on Parliament Hill. All these activities are something that I will remember the rest of my life.

Walking through the Ottawa airport, I was thrilled to have seen my picture and article in the Ottawa Citizen.

Kindergarten Activity Calendar - August

The year before and when a child starts school is an exciting and sometimes stressful time for children and their parents. We, at The Learning Partnership, developed the Welcome to Kindergarten^TM Activity Calendar to help families get ready for the child’s transition into formal schooling.

To learn how to use this Calendar, please read our earlier post on the Kindergarten Activity Calendar.

The activities for this month are:

Week 1

Collect newspapers and flyers that come in the mail. Help your child to cut out and paste the pictures and words to make little books – My Red Book e.g., My Favourite Snacks

Week 2

Play games using reading, writing and matching – e.g. Go Fish, Uno, Bingo, Concentration.

Week 3

Write a message, send a greeting card or make a list. Take the time to show your child what you are doing and read it together.

Week 4

At the grocery store or shopping centre play the game “Can you read the sign?” Point out signs and labels and ask your child to what each is, using the clues guess around.

L’année qui précède l’initiation scolaire et où l’enfant commence la maternelle peut être une période stimulante mais parfois stressante, autant pour l’enfant que pour ses parents. Le Partenariat en Éducation a créé le calendrier d’activités Bienvenue à la maternelle pour aider les familles à préparer leurs enfants à intégrer le système scolaire.

Pour apprendre à utiliser ce calendrier, veuillez consulter la section Le Calendrier d’activités familiales.

Voici les activités de ce mois-ci :

1^re Semaine

Gardez les journaux et dépliants que vous recevez par la poste et aidez votre enfant à découper des photos et des mots et à les coller pour fabriquer de petits livres. P. ex. Mon livre rouge, Mes collations préférées.

2^e Semaine

Jouez à des jeux qui font appel à la lecture, à l’écriture et aux correspondances.
P. ex Go Fish, Uno,
Bingo, Concentration.

3^e Semaine

Lorsque vous écrivez un message, envoyez une carte de souhait ou dressez une liste, prenez le temps de montrer à votre enfant ce que vous faites et lisez ensemble ce que vous venez d’écrire.

4^e Semaine

Au supermarché ou au centre commercial, jouez à lire les affiches. Montrez des affiches et des étiquettes à votre enfant et demandez-lui de deviner ce qu’elles disent en utilisant les indices autour de lui.
